WCVB-TV Highlights Townsend's Alternative Energy Move

Townsend Oil & Propane is making news with its decision to replace traditional home heating oil with new BioPure™ fuel.
WCVB-TV Boston recently highlighted Townsend's move to BioPure as a significant, pro-environment step. Emmy Award-winning reporter Amalia Barreda visited Townsend headquarters in Danvers and interviewed executives Jim and Mark Townsend about the pioneering move.
"We think it's the right thing to do," Jim Townsend told Ms. Barreda. "It's cleaner. It's greener. It's good for the environment. It reduces the heating costs of our customers. And we believe that our blend ultimately saves people three to four percent on their heat."
BioPure has several advantages over traditional heating oil:
- It burns cleaner.
- It improves the fuel economy of heating systems by 3 to 4 percent.
- It is a flexible fuel that can incorporate a variety of renewable feedstocks, from soybean oil to used cooking oil.
- It decreases demand for foreign oil.
- By using BioPure, you support both alternative energy production and agriculture in the United States.
By replacing Oilheat with BioPure, Townsend will save about 200,000 gallons of oil per year across its customer base, helping to conserve the supply and reduce demand for imported oil.
BioPure is approved for use in all Oilheat systems by ASTM International (formerly the American Society for Testing and Materials). It will work in all existing Oilheat systems with no equipment modifications.
Oilheat dealers across the Bay State will follow in Townsend's footsteps in the years ahead. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts has mandated the replacement of traditional Oilheat with biofuel blends starting in July 2010.
